Speaking more than one language is a huge advantage in today's global society. Multilingual speakers have more job opportunities, sharper cognitive functioning skills, and enhance cross-cultural communication skills. It's no wonder more than half of the world's population speaks at least two languages.
This year Carolina Suarez will teach Spanish at New Morning School, utilizing the Bright Loritos curriculum. The Bright Loritos curriculum takes a natural approach to language instruction, using activities, music, and stories to help kids learn a language with the support of passionate native speakers.
Methodology
Our teaching methodology is designed based on research by world language experts. We know that children learn their first language through immersion, so the program is structured to provide a similar environment for children to learn a second language just as naturally. Comprehensible input and immersion are essential aspects of language learning, but for learning to be most effective, students must be engaged in the lessons. Our program uses games, music, and storytelling to get kids excited about using the target language.
Curriculum
Our curriculum aligns with the World-Readiness Standards from the American Council on the Teaching of World Languages. The curriculum is based on learning units strategically sequenced to promote effective language learning. Each unit focuses on a specific language learning objective that builds communication and vocabulary skills through play-based activities, Total Physical Response (TPR) routines, and multicultural perspectives. Each lesson centers around creating a natural language setting in addition to parroting (repeating) high-frequency vocabulary words and phrases. This communicative teaching approach is an alternative to the grammar-based language learning approach that was popular in the 20th century. Today, language experts understand that learning doesn't happen in a grammar textbook; it happens when students are immersed in the language and have ample opportunities to practice using it in meaningful ways.
The Early Years
Pre-School
Students have opportunities to develop their gross motor skills through activities that promote spatial awareness, cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility, and body control.
Primary
The goal of the physical education program include developing a sound body and mind through physical fitness and activity. While students improve their health by developing cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength and flexibility, they also cultivate self-esteem, good sportsmanship, leadership skills, interpersonal relationships and responsible behavior. Basic loco-motor skills are also developed, and a variety of team and individual sports are introduced.
The Later Years
Elementary
The physical education program provides the cornerstone for life-long learning and health, and provides the basis for the skill-building necessary for the athletic program and future competitive participation. Half of each class class is spent in strength and conditioning activities. The second half is spent playing games such as capture the flag, ultimate Frisbee, floor hockey, kickball, tennis, dodge ball and lacrosse.
Middle School
Students participate in activities which lay the groundwork for a lifetime of physical fitness. Team sports are explored as a means to promote collaboration, social skills and self-confidence. All lessons are adapted to the specific skill set of the students, with the ultimate goal of enhancing the students' health in the long-term.
