Piaget Learning at New Morning School

What is it that sets apart the curriculum of New Morning School from other local schools?

For nearly 50 years, New Morning School’s learning methods and philosophy has followed the work of Swiss psychologist and philosopher Jean Piaget. As you read more about Jean Piaget, you may notice something about his writings in reference to developmental psychology and cognitive theory.

Time Magazine named Jean Piaget one of the 100 Most Important People of the 20th Century. His findings were also the basis for much of the work of his contemporary, Maria Montessori.

Although there are some similarities in the teachings of Piaget and Montessori, there are many differences. Let’s look at how they match up.

The Montessori system of education is similar to the approach offered by New Morning School approach in these areas:

  • Hands-on activities
  • Learning focused on creating mental models, not memorizing facts
  • Multiple means of assessing learning
  • Incorporating students’ prior knowledge into the curriculum

However, there are also many differences, as Piaget-based learning truly touches the individual needs of each student.

We are easy to reach from near I-275 and I-96 and M-14, with students from Plymouth, Canton, Northville, Novi, Farmington Hills, Farmington, Livonia, Garden City, Dearborn, Westland, Wixom, Walled Lake, South Lyon, Romulus and other neighboring communities.
